Waihi Beach is 11 km from the township of Waihi and the main highway, with fabulous views out to Mayor Island. With 9 kms of sandy beach, it is ideal for fishing, kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding and swimming. Nearby are the beach communities of Athenree and Bowentown. Waihi Town is one of the most famous gold mining towns in New Zealand. The history of this pioneering period is apparent everywhere. Old wooden buildings feature here. Nearby, visit the Karangahake Gorge, which is the site of the original gold rush in 1875. Follow the old railway line and walk alongside the sparkling Ohinemuri River to see the old gold trails. |
