Things to do in Cromwell: 5 reasons to book a weekend away

Table of Contents

Queenstown gets the adrenaline, Wānaka gets the Instagram shot, and quietly sitting close to both is Cromwell — good wine, shimmering lakes, wide-open mountain landscapes, gold-rush history, and frankly, none of the crowds. This tiny town still often gets treated like a place you drive through. Here’s why you should book a stay in Cromwell instead.

Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail: Cromwell’s best day out

Lake Dunstan

Let’s start with something that promises spectacular scenery and a fair bit of history along the way. Opened in 2021, the Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail has quickly become one of the must-do rides in the South Island. The full route runs 55km, starting at Smiths Way, north of Cromwell, but you have the option to cycle 41km from Cromwell to Clyde (shuttle transport available).

Along the way, the trail winds through Bannockburn vineyards, rounds Cornish Point, and then into the rocky Cromwell Gorge. The second half is more challenging, but the views are equally rewarding. And if you’re not keen on two wheels, the lake itself is worth the trip, with its still water making it perfect for swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding in the afternoon.

A ride like this is better with a cosy home to return to at the end of the day. Booking a holiday home near the Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail means the hardest part of the day stays the ride itself, not a long drive home afterwards.

Wine tasting: Central Otago pinot noir

Cromwell sits at the heart of Central Otago’s wine country, and the region’s cool climate has made it one of the most awarded pinot noir producers in the country.

The cellar doors are close enough to make a proper afternoon of it. Wooing Tree, Scott Base, Wild Earth, and Misha’s Vineyard all sit within easy reach of town.

Bannockburn’s worth the extra drive on its own. Te Kano Estate Cellar Door, situated on the famed Felton Rd, is cantilevered above the Kawarau River, and the Bannockburn Sluicings Track sits right nearby so you get both, the history and the wine in the same afternoon.

A day like that ends better with somewhere close by to put your feet up. A holiday home near Bannockburn means the trip back after a long tasting is short, and there’s a proper kitchen waiting if dinner in is more the mood than dinner out.

Old Cromwell Town and its gold-rush past

The town’s gold-rush past runs deep. Cromwell exploded almost overnight in the 1860s when gold turned up in the rivers, then quietly settled into the smaller, steadier town it is today.

Much of the original town was later submerged when the Clyde Dam went in, but what survived has been preserved as the Cromwell Heritage Precinct: original stone buildings, small galleries, and cafés.

For the hands-on version of that history, the Goldfields Mining Centre is the one to get into, with restored mining equipment and gold panning that’s run the way it would have been done originally. There’s something about finding an actual fleck of gold in your own pan that no amount of reading about the gold rush quite matches, and it’s a strong pick if there are kids along for the trip.

A morning spent digging through Cromwell’s past is a good excuse for an easy afternoon after. A holiday home near the Cromwell Heritage Precinct keeps the old town and the Goldfields Mining Centre within walking distance, so the rest of the day can move at whatever pace it wants to.

A day at Highlands Motorsport Park

Sitting on 88 hectares and featuring a 4.1-kilometre international standard racing circuit, Highlands Motorsport Park is one of the best reasons why you need to extend your stay in Cromwell.

The go-karts run a purpose-built circuit, and for anyone who wants speed without being behind the steering wheel, Highlands Taxi puts up to four people in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo with a professional drive (you’ll be hitting 180km per hour on a 15-minute lap). If your budget stretches a bit further, the Supercar Fast Dash will have you talking about the experience for years afterwards — riding shotgun in a Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari 488 GTB.

Beyond the driving, there’s an 18-hole mini golf course and a café overlooking the circuit for lunch with a front-row seat to whatever’s happening on the track. Then there’s the Loo With A View where your bathroom selfies will get a serious upgrade.

The museum is also worth a visit, featuring a collection of rare and record-breaking cars and memorabilia tracing New Zealand’s racing story. It’s the kind of place that pulls in people who’d never call themselves motorsport fans and still finds a way to hold their attention for longer than expected.

Cromwell’s stone fruit season

Time this one right and you’ll see why the giant fruit sculpture on the way into town isn’t exaggerating the town’s relationship with it. In summer, Ripponvale Road is where you’d find all the buzz — a stretch lined with pick-your-own cherry orchards, where you’re handed a bucket, shown how to pick properly, and left to work your way through the trees. It’s the kind of thing that sounds like a minor detour and ends up being the best two hours of the trip; kids especially tend to take it more seriously.

While most people give Cromwell an afternoon, we think it deserves the whole weekend. Between the ride, the wine, the gold, the go-karts, and the cherries, there’s enough to pick one as your excuse. Browse Cromwell holiday homes close to whichever one wins you over and let the rest of the list fill in around it.
