Our go-to guide for food and wine lovers in Queenstown

Queenstown’s epic scenery has long given it a reputation as an adrenaline junkies paradise. However, there remains a much more relaxing way to enjoy the awe-inspiring surrounds on offer here: over a glass of wine or an indulgent dinner! Home to several fine dining restaurants, cute cafes as well a very famous burger eatery (with queues out the doors!), Queenstown is also found just a 40-minute drive away from the Central Otago wine region – home to 200 vineyards – making it the ideal spot for food and wine lovers alike. There are a range of Queenstown wine trail tours on offer, however for those of you wishing to stay in the town centre, we’ve rounded up the best establishments to sample the top wines and must-try food in Queenstown. Prepare your palates!

1. Akarua Wines & Kitchen by Artisan

A gorgeous garden complete with a historic cottage that has been lovingly restored, sets a beautiful scene for a coffee and breakfast date or for a shared long lunch over wine with friends. There’s a certain charm about this special little spot, and the wine and food are equally as excellent. The menu centres on seasonal local produce and is best enjoyed with a glass of well respected Akura wine. The doors are also open until 5pm so theres no need to rush.

2. Madam Woo

Big on flavour and never one to disappoint; award-winning chef Josh Emmett’s Madam Woo offers sensational authentic Malaysian hawker food. Their crispy ‘hawker rolls’ have somewhat of a cult following, and there’s no shortage of variety on the fresh and fun menu. From soups, wok dishes, curries and sweets such as Portuguese custard tarts and the famed ‘roti donut’, you’re sure to leave very full and with no regrets!

3. Gibbston Valley

Blending award-winning wines with delicious eats and unique experiences such as wine tasting in New Zealand’s largest wine cave, is what Gibbston Valley is all about. Enjoy a private tour of Home Block, the region’s oldest vineyard, and catch a glimpse of the winemakers in action. The seasonal restaurant menu is prepared by Head Chef Anthony Gradiska, and features a carefully curated selection of dishes, each with ingredients that reflect local flavours. Of course, these are best served with an expertly-matched Gibbston valley wine.

4. Bespoke Kitchen

This gorgeous café is well known for its wholesome approach, with a menu comprising of numerous gluten free, vegan and raw options all speaking to health and well being. Dabble in an array of goodies to fuel your southern adventures with the ‘breakfast board’; packed with poached eggs, avocado mash, sourdough toast, a chia pot with pineapple coconut whip and a daily greens shot to top it all off! If you’re partial to something delectably sweet then the cinnamon pancakes complete with caramelised fruit, raspberry chia and other treats have your name on them! It’s not hard to see why Bespoke Kitchen took out the 2015 New Zealand Café of the Year title!

5. Amisfield

Enjoying an idyllic setting overlooking Lake Hayes, Amisfield is famous for its exquisite cuisine and stunning winery. As a specialist maker of both pinot noir and perfectly aromatic white wines this is one of our favourite places for wine tasting in Queenstown. And here you can also treat yourself and try the ‘trust the chef’ menu for a guaranteed tastebud sensation!
