Our 5 favorite dog friendly beaches in Auckland
Auckland is blessed with an abundance of incredible beaches. Us Kiwi’s love spending time at the beach and our canine companions do too (arguably even more so!). Running in out of the waves, meeting other furry friends, chasing sticks and stretching their legs is what it’s all about at the beach. There’s a few beach rules that can keep dogs away from the beach, so it’s important to be aware of which beaches are available during different times of the year.
We’ve rounded up the top 5 dog friendly beaches in Auckland to ensure the ulti-mutt walkies.
1. Takapuna Beach – North Shore
Takapuna Beach has to be one of our favourite places as it’s equally enjoyable whether you have two legs or four! Located on the North Shore you’ll find this long stretch of shoreline just back from the shops. Excellent year round, but especially in summer where you can join the early birds as the sun rises, enjoying many meet and greets for your dog. During summer months dogs may only be off-leash before 10am and after 6pm, however – your dog can run wild throughout the rest of the year! Grab a coffee to go from the super dog friendly Takapuna Beach Cafe, or stop for breakfast after getting your exercise in.
2. Kakamatua Inlet
Without a doubt one of the best kept secrets in Auckland for both owners and dogs alike. You’ll find this paradise approximately a 15-minute drive from Titirangi. We recommend planning your trip to coincide with low tide so that your dog can roam to its heart’s extent and play in the shallow water. There’s even a fresh-water stream which your dog can drink from – a welcome addition after all that adventure they’ll be having. Thirsty work!
3. Muriwai – West Coast
The wild beaches located on Auckland’s west coast are some of the best for exploring. Muriwai makes for an excellent day trip, located approximately a 40 minute drive from the CBD. Between the hours of 7pm and 9am during summer, your pooch can roam wild and free along the rugged shoreline, snapping at the waves and goofing around as much as they like. There is also a park with an off-leash exercise area for dogs should you plan a visit outside of the beach times. Humans will also be stoked to find there are plentiful walking tracks nearby which make for some seriously scenic discoveries!
4. Bethells Beach (Te Henga) – West Coast
Bethells is the spot to be with so much space and numerous areas to investigate. Dogs can run around, paddle about and are guaranteed to be all tuckered out and ready for nap on the way home! It’s important to know that during summer dogs must be on a leash on the main beach as there are protected dotterels nesting. However they can hop, skip and jump around off leash at the beautiful Waitakere Bay – located just to the right of the main beach across the river. Another wonderful spot on the wild west to visit with your canine pal for a spot of fetch!
5. Omaha Beach – Rodney District
A firm favourite amongst many Aucklanders, Omaha Beach is an idyllic stretch of whute sand and surf about 50 minutes drive from the CBD. Jump in the car and head up north to feel worlds away front the hustle and bustle of the city. Your dog will be able to complete as many ‘zoomies’ as it desires and get some serious exercise in, all while you take in one of the most picturesque beaches in Auckland. It’s also a great spot for a picnic, or pop into nearby Matakana for a meal.
