Taking the Hanmer Springs dining experience by storm, this unique restaurant is one of a kind in New Zealand. MK Restaurant only does one cuisine – dumplings. 7. Black Estate ($$$)
Black Estate is an absolute must either en-route to Hanmer Springs or as a small day trip while on holiday. The stunning views of the vineyards, rivers and rolling hills of Waipara Valley are reason enough to visit Black Estate, but the promise of world-class food and wine leave no room for argument. Black Estate sits perfectly on top of a hill that also acts as one of their vineyards and was designed in a simple yet elegant manner that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature; it has even won them several prestigious architecture awards! But the real reason to go is for the dining experience. With only a few tables available, bookings are basically essential. The menu changes daily based on the foraging that morning, but one thing is always the same – the wine is the best in all the region and the freshly-baked ciabatta bread, locally sourced olive oil and hand-made truffle butter served with each meal is simply divine. Sold!
