1. Cyprus Tree

Open year-round, for brunch, snacks and dinner – this restaurant and bar serve up quality dishes with a healthy side of Kiwi hospitality. There’s a great kids menu to appease the fussiest of eaters in your family. You’ll also enjoy Ohakune’s best range of NZ craft beers for the big kids and delicious warming dinners such as mushroom risotto and lamb pappardelle. Sink back into the couches next to the fire in winter, or make the most of the outdoor deck come summer.

2. Osteria

Warm up after a day on the slopes with a pizza, or generous serving of creamy pasta at this contemporary Italian restaurant. Expect to find charming rustic furnishings, roaring open fireplaces and old photographs creating a splendid spot to unwind. The whole family will love indulging in the decadent dessert pizza to finish and the adults will be pleased to find an entire menu page dedicated to Australian and NZ wines, with another reserved for Italy. Sold!

3. Johnny’s Chocolate Eclair Shop

Need a snack for the car or feel like treating yourself? Look no further! A trip to Ohakune would not be complete without sampling the world-famous-in-new-zealand chocolate eclair from this somewhat unassuming bakery. Allan Nation learned the craft from his late father – Johnny Nation. The bakery looks more like a convenience store, but inside you’ll find next-level baked goods! As well as making 30kg of chocolate icing for the eclairs each day, Allan also makes giant sausage rolls, pies, decadent cookies, rich slices, doughnuts and wild-berry turnovers. Say no more.

4. The Blind Finch

After traversing the Tongariro Crossing, cycling the Old Coach Road or playing in the snow with the kids, there’s one of these beast-sized burgers with your name on it! Enjoy the extensive menu with burgers reflecting flavours unique to numerous countries, tasty sides and also more than half a dozen varieties of eggs Benedict for breakfast. The gourmet burgers are cooked on a custom-made manuka wood-fire grill creating an exquisite flavour.

5. OCR Eatery & Wine Bar

Short for Old Coach Road, OCR is a favourite among both locals and visitors. Located at the bottom of the Ohakune Mountain Road, it makes for the perfect stop for refreshments after hiking or cycling the stunning tracks in the area. You’ll find a great kids menu, plenty of sandwiches, burgers, salads, breakfasts and baked goods to choose from, as well as gluten-free options. There’s something for everyone.
