Dunedin Railways<\/a> is a train fanatic\u2019s dream come true. You\u2019ll start the experience by arriving at Dunedin\u2019s Heritage Train station to board your train through the Taieri Gorge. The train ride combines iconic New Zealand scenery with South Island history. You\u2019ll wind your way over numerous gorges and zip through ten tunnels until you arrive at the famous Wingatui Viaduct. Better yet, because of the remote locations the train travels through, cell phone coverage is limited – encouraging the little ones to fully take in the surrounding sights!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Dunedin is home to some beautiful gardens. The Dunedin Botanic Gardens<\/a> are located close to the University of Otago and have been around since 1863. Stroll through the herb gardens, meander alongside the duck ponds, take in the Japanese garden and check out the children\u2019s playground. Then hop over to the Dunedin Chinese Gardens, which is located next to the Dunedin Railway Station. The garden area is surrounded by a 4-metre perimeter wall and has a tea house, zig-zag bridges and a climbing mountain. You\u2019ll easily think you’ve been transported overseas.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Perched at the top of the Otago Peninsula is New Zealand\u2019s only castle. Boasting incredibly scenic views, Larnach Castle<\/a> offers visitors the chance to take a guided tour, dine in the castle\u2019s dining hall and roam the immaculately kept botanical gardens. No matter what age you are, you\u2019ll definitely feel like royalty roaming this unique part of New Zealand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the best-kept secrets in Dunedin is the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool. One of the only heated saltwater pools in New Zealand, these pools are located in the beach suburb of St Clair. Known primarily for rough seas and an epic surf hub, these pools offer a safe alternative for a family filled day in the sun. There is an on-site caf\u00e9, but a range of quirky eateries are only a stone throw away from the pools as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Dunedin offers some of the best mini golf courses in the South Island. Wal\u2019s Plant & Fun Land<\/a> is an aesthetically pleasing mini-golf course that is also home to a nursery and real fruit ice cream shop. Once the kids finish a round of golf, there\u2019s also a train ride and trampoline to entertain them while the adults sip on a cheeky wine perhaps!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
