If you ever needed an excuse to plan a weekend getaway, 15 new ones have just popped up on your radar. New Zealand’s dining scene got its first official nod from Michelin, with 14 restaurants picking up a star, plus one that went further and picked up two. The stars are spread across four cities \u2014 Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown \u2014 which means the map for your next weekend away just got a lot more interesting. A great meal has always been a good enough reason to book flights; now there’s an actual shortlist telling you where to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queenstown: NZ\u2019s only two-Michelin-star restaurant<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Essence<\/a> just doesn\u2019t have the country\u2019s first-ever two-Michelin-star restaurant \u2014 and the only one in Aotearoa to hold two \u2014 but it has a spot right above Lake Whakatipu, tucked into the ROKI Collection hotel with the kind of view that\u2019s doing just as much work as the menu.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Amisfield<\/a> , R\u0101t\u0101<\/a> , and Sherwood<\/a> also picked up one star, and Kika, just over in W\u0101naka, adds one more, so there’s a proper ladder of dinners here \u2014 the once-in-a-while splurge and the \u2018how has nobody told me about this place\u2019 find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>And there’s a lot to fill the hours before dinner: a morning stroll by the water, the gondola for the view, an afternoon out at Gibbston Valley<\/a> tasting your way through some of the country’s best pinot. Add in day trips<\/a> to Arrowtown<\/a> and Glenorchy, and there\u2019s reason enough to stretch a weekend into a few extra days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay<\/strong>: A trip with this much going on benefits from somewhere with a bit of give in it. A holiday home<\/a> nearby means the wine afternoon can run long, there’s a proper kitchen for the mornings you’d rather not go out, and enough room to spread out over four days.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next on the list: Wellington<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wellington deserves its own food weekend, and you don\u2019t need to overthink it. Three one-star restaurants (Jano Bistro<\/a>, Logan Brown<\/a>, and Ortega Fish Shack<\/a>), packed into a city centre small enough to walk with a coffee in hand, complaining about the wind the whole way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The size is the whole appeal. Make a day of it before dinner. Cuba Street’s still the best few blocks in the country for wandering without a plan, with vintage stores and hole-in-the-wall bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If wine’s the mission, Wairarapa’s an easy day trip out: Martinborough’s cellar doors are close enough together to walk between a few of them, which is exactly the kind of afternoon that makes the evening’s reservation feel earned. Or for a relaxed day by the beach, Kapiti Coast is a firm favourite among the locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay<\/strong>: A central Wellington accommodation<\/a> lets the city do the work. An apartment near the waterfront means everything worth walking to is actually walkable without a single Uber involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which Auckland restaurants made the Michelin Guide?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Auckland took the biggest slice of the list, with five of the 14 one-star restaurants nationally: Ahi<\/a>, Paris Butter<\/a>, Tala<\/a>, Mudbrick<\/a>, and Tantalus Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Tala by Chef Henry Onesemo picked up the very first Michelin star ever awarded anywhere in Oceania. Ahi., meanwhile, is where chef Benjamin Bayly\u2019s home ground: he grows a fair amount of what ends up on the plate himself \u2014 his own kitchen garden in South Auckland, waste composted straight back into that soil, the dining room built out of reclaimed native timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the restaurants are enough to book a weekend trip<\/a>, the city around them holds up its end, too. The Wynyard Quarter is an easy morning wander, with bars, casual eating, and enough open space along the waterfront that nobody’s rushing anyone anywhere. Mission Bay offers a proper beach within 10 minutes of the CBD, an ice cream strip that needs no explanation, and views back across to Rangitoto that make the whole scene look more like a postcard than your average Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Then there\u2019s Mudbrick and Tantalus Estate on Waiheke, the island\u2019s one-star restaurants, which means the trip doesn’t have to stay in the city. One lunch reservation can turn into a genuine reason to catch the ferry out for the day. Mornings suit a slow start at one of the beaches near Oneroa, followed by a wander through the village itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay<\/strong>: Base yourself wherever the trip’s actually pulling you. A Waiheke holiday home<\/a> suits a wine-led weekend; an Auckland accommodation closer to the city<\/a> suits a proper food crawl.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christchurch: the best food weekend away right now<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Christchurch has been quietly coming up on everyone\u2019s weekend trip discussions, and now with two one-star restaurants, you don\u2019t want to skip this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inati<\/a> and Tussock Hill <\/a>are the two carrying Christchurch’s one-star recognition, and they couldn’t be more different nights out. Inati means \u2018to share\u2019 in M\u0101ori, and that’s exactly the format \u2014 British chef Simon Levy and his wife Lisa run the room around a chef’s table, reimagining European classics with Canterbury produce. Tussock Hill is the other kind of one-star entirely: a boutique vineyard up on the Port Hills, lunch-only, seasonal sharing plates built specifically around its own estate wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Christchurch’s real advantage is what surrounds it. There\u2019s Waipara Valley, approx. 45 minutes, which has been quietly turning out excellent riesling and pinot for years without much fuss or fanfare. Governors Bay and Lyttelton are worth the drive over the hill, harbour views included. And if the trip’s got a few more days in it, Hanmer Springs<\/a> and the Alps aren’t far past that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay<\/strong>: Christchurch adds up to the easiest of the four cities to stretch past a weekend without really trying. Split the stay if the trip allows for it \u2014 a cosy holiday home<\/a> near the city promises a night in town for the restaurant list and a night out near Waipara or the hills for the slower half of your trip.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
