Matt “Our family spent the pre-Christmas break here at Moetapu, and had a wonderful time!”
The two teenagers loved having the sleepout to themselves and spent hours downstairs playing darts. Over the summer the flowering Rata in the garden attract dozens of Tui at any one time and the occasional bell bird too. Sitting out on the deck watching the wildlife was a particular highlight. At night we were serenaded by multiple Ruru doing call and response across the property, and we're pretty sure we heard a Kiwi one night. Our main objective of the trip was boating and fishing. The sound was sheltered and for great wakeboarding & biscuiting even with complete beginners. The 'boat ramp' at Double Bay Reserve, which is right at the foot of the garden is definitely more of a beach launch than a boat ramp. We had a 19' Figlass Lightening behind a 4WD car, and very quickly elected to drive to Havelock and launch instead (which isn't far and couldn't have been easier). While the beach is slightly compacted stoney sand, there are some pretty soft sandy areas around the access point onto the beach in particular. I reckon a low range 4WD with decent tyres would be fine but I'd have wanted a winch with me before trying it with mine! The bay flattens out pretty quickly and within an hour of low tide is only 250-300mm deep out to maybe 20-30m from the shore, so even beaching a boat launched at Havelock, you've got to pick your times. All in all, we'll be back and would definitely recommend it to others too.
Thankyou for your kind words. Yes the bird life is amazing in the area. One night a Morepork landed on the deck balastrade which was a special moment. We also love checking out our resident glow worm population at night in the garden. I will upgrade the information folder to more clearly include the Moetapu Bay Community concrete boat ramp and floating jetty, which is approx 2km further up Moetapu Bay Road, as this could be another option for launching your boat. Hope you will have an opportunity to return again. Bachcare
