The property
Leave the city behind and discover Hidden Springs, a private off-grid cabin tucked into the wild beauty of Karangahake Gorge. Just 1 hour 45 minutes from central Auckland and 1 hour from Tauranga, this secluded escape is ideal for couples, romantic retreats, or anyone needing time out in nature. Set on a 90-hectare organic farm, the cabin is surrounded by native bush, regenerative planting, and two natural springs. Large bi-fold doors open to a spacious deck where you can soak up sunshine and stunning views of Mt Karangahake. Inside, a tranquil bedroom with a queen-size bed offers beautiful views, while a kitchenette, cosy lounge area, and deluxe bathroom complete the interior. When night falls, enjoy a glass of bubbles in the outdoor stone bath under a star-filled sky. Hidden Springs invites you to slow down and disconnect — there’s no TV or internet, just birdsong, babbling brooks, and a fern-fringed hammock for lazy afternoons. A designated firepit area is the perfect spot to toast marshmallows or share a wine at the end of the day. If you’re keen to explore, the cabin is a 5-minute drive to Waikino, with the Falls Retreat Bistro and the historic Waikino Tavern close by. Waihi Beach, Owharoa Falls, Dickey Flat, and the famous Karangahake Gorge walk and tunnel are all within easy reach. Designed to be inclusive, Hidden Springs features a wheelchair ramp plus a fully accessible kitchen and bathroom. Bring your own food and drink and cook with the double gas burner or BBQ, with all cutlery, crockery, pots, and pans provided.
Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.
Mobile phone reception is limited at the cabin, you will find better coverage up the driveway.
Please note fire pit use is dependent on the time of year and wind conditions, and at certain times of the year will be unavailable due to higher than normal fire risk. Your hosts will let you know if there is a fire ban in place when you are visiting.
This property has unfenced access to a working farm and a large expanse of bush nearby. It is essential that guests take personal responsibility for the safety of their group in and around the bush area adjacent to the property.
Strictly no EV charging permitted on the property. For guests with electric vehicles, charging stations are available nearby in Paeroa.
About the location
Step back into New Zealand’s gold-mining heritage while immersing yourself in lush native bush, river-carved landscapes and scenic trails. Nestled between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges — just 10 minutes from Waihi and an hour from Tauranga — Karangahake Gorge is a natural and historic wonder. Follow walking and cycling trails along the old Paeroa–Waihi rail line and discover relics of the gold-rush era, from tunnels and stamping batteries to tramway tracks hidden in the bush. Take the popular Windows Walk / Rail Tunnel Loop (around 1 hour, 3–4 km) to wander through a 1 km tunnel, cross swinging bridges, and peer through rock “windows” into the gorge below. For a longer adventure, the Historic Walkway (up to 14 km return) leads past riverbanks, ruins and native forest all the way to Waikino. Don’t miss a short detour to Owharoa Falls, a tranquil cascade just off the main track. All our holiday homes in the area are pre-inspected and ready for instant online booking, so you can simply relax and enjoy everything this remarkable destination has to offer.
