“We had a truly wonderful time in Paptowai.”
Such and incredible place and the cottage was perfect for all of our requirements, except for the bed upstairs. It is in quite a bad state and needs replacing - once that is done, the place is simply perfect.

Jay “We thought this bach was very overpriced for what it is.”
The photos on the website did not match bach. It appeared in Bachcare website that you can see the ocean from the bach - you cannot see the ocean, but can you see is a rusty old container outside. Oven old, bathroom flooded due to drain not working. My friend, who was sleeping in the downstairs bedroom got bedbug bites on her back. The bach could do with insect screen upstairs on the window so that you have leave them open without the insect attacking you at night.

Helen “We had a lovely stay and thanks so much as everything was so clean and tidy!”
The absolute best bit was the quiet except for the beautiful sounds of the Tui's and Wood Pigeon's, just magical! The bach was warm and cosy too. We appreciated the kitchen table space and comfy chairs and couch. If we come back again we need to bring you a replacement heat light fan unit for the bathroom as this needs a replacement, also an over mirror light for your bathroom, I wish we had known as we could have bought this with us and helped out. Can we suggest proper curtains for the upstairs bedroom as we only had about 5-6 hours sleep a night, but we are used to that as ex Scouts leaders. Also a petite couch or padded bench with storage under for the kitchen area wall that backs onto the bathroom. Our son Mathew slept on the day bed as he did not want to share with his brother. A garden or sleepover foam mattress would be a massive bonus. Mathew also cleaned out all the spiders from underneath that area before he slept there, so that job is sorted for another year ;)

The downstairs bedroom is poor. the container should be removed , it spoils the garden & outlook . some outdoor furniture should be provided. the garden needs attention.

Photos make the house look much more spacious than it is - only room for one sofa. View out kitchen window is blocked by a shipping container. Beds were comfortable but kitchen is very small with no space to keep food. Small fridge. Master bedroom (upstairs) thin curtains did not cover all the windows and no curtain for the window above the bed will mean it would be cold in cooler months. Only a short walk to coffee truck and beach walk. Papatowai well located for visiting the sights. McLean Falls the highlight.

Clemence “The house is very well located, sunny, and very charming.”
We enjoyed the basic comforts of a typical kiwi bach. The garden is lovely with lots of native birds. However, we have had to share it with several neighbours' dogs (not always pleasant with children). The kitchen and bathroom are very basic, but overall we recommend this house in the Catlins.

It is conveniently located for exploring all that the Catlins have to offer. I do feel that the property is rather expensive given that it is a little tired looking and would benefit from some updating/maintenance.

You're treated to bird song in the morning and evenings. Our only disappointment was the shower, which had minimal pressure and no soap provided.

All needs met. Appliances necessary for a cozy comforting stay. Serene views. Close walks, and stimulating beach bush and birds. Handy to all the waterfalls, and cathedral caves.

Further problems with noise the second night, perhaps the hot water cylinder or the solar panels, this time right next to the upstairs bedroom.

We would definitely book it again. it is close to the beach, the gypsy coffee cart and central in the Catlins for visiting waterfalls, native forest, fabulous beaches and worth the two nights stay to explore this beautiful region.

A lovely neighbour bought us over some vegetables and the bird life was amazing! A few annoying factors were that we had difficulty in finding basic info such as the wifi password and where to hang washing (no outdoor clothes line). Also there is a lovely view from the upstairs bedroom however you canât sit up in bed to enjoy it due to some low shelves!

We were very snug with no need for heating or cooling despite the ever changing the weather. The photos on the site are very old and don't do this place justice. The views are fantastic, particularly from the upstairs bedroom. The place is very clean and comfortable. The walk through the forest to the beach is great even in rain.

Surfinn Eco Cottage is a modern self contained Papatowai cottage that's waiting for you to arrive and take in the best that the Catlins coast has to offer. A two story two bedroom dwelling, Surfinn Eco Cottage is located in the quaint coastal village of Papatowai, right in the heart of the beautiful and historically important Catlins Coast, which is one of the most stunning regions of the country! Noted for its big wave surfing, the Catlins is a surfer's dream come true! Paua and crayfish are swimming in the area for those keen on their snorkelling, and the magical rainforest and waterfalls in the area will appeal to all. Noted for some of New Zealand's rare and endangered wildlife, the Catlins features everything from yellow-eyed penguins and sea lions, all the way through to gannets, kakariki, and wood pigeons - it's truly a wildlife lover's paradise!
