- Leah, October 2020Gordon “Beautiful peaceful getaway nestled in native bush.”
An ideal place for a romantic retreat or to escape the hussle and bustle of modern day life. Wake to native birds greeting the day, take a stroll to Akaroa or have a soak in the spa bath and relax on the balcony with a good book. We found our happy place.
- Gordon, October 2020Jeanette “Lovely cottage, we had arrived an the person who meet us to give us the key, had been there abit earlier and turned the heater on so it wasn't to cold.”
It had been windy and some rain. It was lovely and comfortable to walk into. So thank you. It was lovely to hear the bird songs in the morning and evening. Enjoyed the walking track to the metal rhino etc. Would come back.

- Selina, June 2021Nicola “Gorgeous wee spot, couple nice walks close by.”
A village of cottages yet you don’t even hear or see other people. Overton has a hearty fire place, the water pressure is fantastic too! Great views overall 10/10

The shower knob was broken according to card left on table was for last people to this was an awesome place to stay very enjoyable nb bird feeder was broken also
- JOHN, March 2023Juliet Catherine “Great cottage.”
Enjoyed our stay. Easy access to walks to town and headlands. Enjoyed all the noises of the birds and insect chorus.
- Juliet Catherine, February 2024Jeremy “Fantastic view.”
Comfortable bed. Our only grouse was the state of the upper part of the drive up to the unit. We were in a small hire car, and the ruts in the road were enough to either puncture a tyre, or worse still, break the axle
- Jeremy, May 2025Craig “Fabulous location, couple of minute drive into the township.”
Great views over Akaroa from the deck. Good facilities and comfortable bed. Enjoyed the various birds that lived round the house.
- Craig, April 2023Kirsten “We loved the place, comfortable and tidy only thing we would suggest is maybe getting a couple of comfortable pillows for the bed.”
- Kirsten, August 2024Steve “There is on going confusion over the location of the cottages dates back several years re previous reviews.”
We only realized we were at the correct address because we met the caretaker at the entrance. It would be great to view all the cottages in one format. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Steve, June 2023Thank you for reviewing your recent stay here, Steve. We are discussing your feedback with the local team and property owner, so that future guests have an easier time when checking in. Regardless of this issue, we are glad you enjoyed your stay here. Bachcare
Jane “Lovely, comfortable and relaxing stay at Overton cottage with amazing views over Akaroa harbour and beautiful bellbirds singing in the morning.”
A really easy walk to Children’s Day and Akaroa. The fire was nice & cozy with plenty of firewood.
- Jane, July 2021Nicki “The overall cottage experience was comfortable and cosy, nestled in the bush and surrounded by native birds and the odd sheep!”
! Very holiday feel and relaxed vibe! We cosied up and enjoyed the fire, appreciated the Scrabble set on offer (and made use of it!) and thought the book sharing idea was novel and thoughtful. We also appreciated the local walks info and made use of one of them! The view was stunning and the location was convenient. We felt spoilt and that we'd certainly had and enjoyed a mini break away. We'll be back!! Thank you. N & G.
- Nicki, October 2021Jeanette “Cottage was lovely.”
We had to go though the fire wood as the stuff on the top was not as dry as the stuff at the back. Also the WiFi kept cutting out. Was lovely listening to the birds outside. The couch was abit uncomfortable.
- Jeanette, June 2024Thank you for your feedback, Jeanette. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay overall, but we are sorry that your stay was impacted and we have passed your comments to our local team. Bachcare
Michael “Great place to stay, great view and quite peaceful, only negative it would have been nice if we had our towels changed while we were there for 4 nights instead of us having to wash and dry them each night.”
- Michael, March 2025Ruth “We had a lovely weekend at Overton cottage.”
The bell birds were singing as we arrived and the heater on to welcome us. We soon had the log fire burning although we did have a bit of a struggle with the handle. We loved the position of the cottage in the kanuka and the views over to Akaroa. There was even a morepork calling through the night.

Thought bed to small and arriving at property to find no milk then had to fix button to get spa bath to work bit of a hard driveway to get up in car
- Trisha, January 2026Susan “We first stayed in this property in 2018 when it didn'tcome under Bachcare.”
There really hasn't been any upgrades or improvements since then. We love the location and views but the cottage is in desperate need of a good renovation. The furniture is the same as our photos from 2018 and everything was very dated back then. The rubber bath mat in the bathroom to use in the shower over the bath was so gross and mouldy we definately didn't use it and removed it from the bathroom. I won't publish the photos we took (I have them saved) but it definitely needs replacing. It is such a beautiful location and could be such a spectacular property but it's neglect lets it down. Honestly we have travelled to the South Island from Australia 5 times and apart from the location and views it has not been in the top 10 of our stays all over the South Island. Accommodation that has been half the price or even double the price has been so much cleaner and more comfortable. Do a small renovation and makeover and it would be worth a 10 rating.
- Susan, May 2026Thank you for your feedback on the improvements required at the property. We are sorry to hear you felt that way about your stay. We are discussing this with the property owners and working hard to ensure this home continues to offer an amazing experience to our guests. Bachcare
Susan “The bed was small and uncomfortable and had I known this I would have not booked it.”
The log burner kept going out when a bigger log went on, (we are not new to all sorts of fire places). The kettle kept turning off before it was boiled. It was an amazing view in lovely bush, but it should be on the information the size of the bed. Its was over priced for what you got.
- Susan, May 2025Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the bed and some amenities didn’t meet your expectations. We understand how important comfort is during a stay. Your comments have been shared with our team, and we’re reviewing the listing to ensure details like bed size are clearly stated. We’re pleased you enjoyed the beautiful bush setting and views, and we appreciate your insights as they help us improve the experience for future guests. Bachcare
Andy “Lovely private cottage, nestled in the bush, just 2 minutes drive to town.”
The spa bath was a bonus! Very clean and well equipped. Heater in the bedroom keeps it cozy and warm. It was perfect for our weekend get-a-away, we had a great stay. Thank you.
- Andy, June 2020Elizabeth “Lovely bush setting with fantails and wood pigeons living around us.”
The cottage has a lovely fireplace making it very cozy. A good distance from town although the main road is quite busy for walking and cycling.
- Elizabeth, March 2019Thank you very much for your feedback, we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time so much and hope to welcome you back again very soon! Bachcare
