Melissa “We absolutely loved staying at this property and the fresh sourdough was absolutely divine!”

Jane “Thankyou soo much.”
We absolutely loved the house, and location. What a lovely idea keeping the house as it was When Lawrence lived there. We found it fascinating to learn about him. And loved browsing through the art books. Our kids loved to explore and play in the space outside especially our 7year old son.
- Jane, April 2024Matthias “Charming old house as described and depicted.”
Loved the location and views. If available on a different platform, try to avoid BachCare, though (see review Ref. 1135656).
- Matthias, March 2024Colin M “First, the pros.”
The distant views from the cottage are great, and the music and books are really special to have. The cottage is also very spacious and well located, and it is charming in its own way. The beds are comfy and the area is quiet, plus it feels very private. Now, the cons. The place could use a thorough cleaning. It’s not horrible, but it looks like the beds get changed and maybe the kitchen gets a once over and that’s about it.It could use some TLC inside and out. The pictures are fairly accurate, but they do make it look like you will be closer to the beach: Actually, the cottage is high above the beach, maybe half a kilometer away. It should also be noted that although there’re are two bathrooms, one is very tiny and neither is on the second floor where all of the bedrooms are. Overall, we enjoyed our time at the cottage. If you’re looking for a unique, kind of funky spot as a base to explore the Otago region, this works well.
- Colin M, January 2024Thank you for your feedback Colin, we are sorry to hear about the cleaning issues during your stay. This is not the standard we expect for our guests and will be following up with the local manager to ensure everything has been remedied and that future guests are not impacted. Bachcare
Thitinun “Everything beyond my expectations.”
I traveled NZ with family. This is our first time in Dunedin. The professor's beach house has amazing view and lighing. Every rooms and corners are perfectly designed for natural light all day long (esp. Dining room). Kitchen is fully equipped very convenient for big family. All super comfy bedrooms are nicely decorated. Cozy and relaxedly living room is truly heart of house like Guest book said. We totally like this house. By the way, main bathroom door lock is quite hard to open. I almost stuck in there after take more than15mins to unlock the door. But it's just a little one problem.

The property
With the Southern Pacific Ocean laid out before you, there’s no better spot to admire the views, relax, listen to music or read a good book. Welcome to the Professor’s Beach House at Brighton! This colonial style two storied holiday home is an ideal space for families as well as creative writers and music buffs. There’s room for extended family groups, sleeping up to 10. Upstairs you will find four bedrooms with dormer windows and captivating views. Downstairs is a main bathroom and a 'mini' bathroom, kitchen, living and sitting rooms and a library. A gorgeous macrocarpa hedge frames the lawn, with outdoor furniture, a covered verandah and space for everyone. Choose a title from one of the best private collections of New Zealand literature you’ll find anywhere, a parting gift from the previous owner, a Professor of English at the University of Otago. Or pop on a CD or record from the large jazz selection and let music surround you. Stoke the fire, and when the weather’s fine, relax on the expansive lawns, to the backdrop of birdsong and the ocean. This beautiful family home features modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TV with Freeview & Netflix, two heat pumps, BBQ, laundry facilities and a well-equipped kitchen including a coffee machine. There are up to five separate study spaces for writers and other creatives. And you’ll be able to enjoy breakfast including local fresh-baked sourdough bread and freshly brewed coffee, while overlooking the sea. Off-street parking is available for up to three vehicles. Bedding upstairs includes a queen, two doubles, a single, a camp bed and a cot. Downstairs in the privacy of the library is a comfortable pull-out sofabed, ideal for those who may want to skip the stairs, and handy to the mini-bathroom. There are toys, board games, table tennis, and a selection of DVDs. Just 25 minutes south of Dunedin, Brighton forms part of an idyllic stretch of coastline to be explored and enjoyed with picnics, fish and chips, and ice-cream. It's just a short stroll down the hill to the Brighton Beach café or to get sand between your toes. Settle in for a must-have holiday experience at the Professor’s Beach House at Brighton.
There is a bank at the edge of the lawn that drops steeply to a levelled area below.
Note that there are three different floor levels within the ground floor of the home. There is one step down from entry way into living room, and this will be marked clearly. There are two steps up from an interior hallway into the library, and this is clearly visible, no markings needed. Also, there is a steep outdoor wooden stairway from the laundry to the basement door, however it has a hand rail and the steps are painted, in reasonable condition and free of moss or other slippery things.
Nighttime visits to the bathroom require a trip down the stairs as the four bedrooms are located upstairs, however a sofabed in the library is on the downstairs level.
Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.About the location
Dunedin is renowned as the student city of New Zealand, where one-sixth of the city's population is made up of the students attending New Zealand's oldest and largest university, the University of Otago. There are a number of cultural attractions in Dunedin, such as the art galleries, museums and libraries, as well as a number of Victorian and Edwardian Buildings scattered throughout the central city. Visitors to Dunedin may also be interested in touring the Speight's Brewery or following the Dunedin Art and Craft Trail. Other attractions include the Dunedin Botanic Gardens, which are the oldest botanic gardens in the country, the Otago Settler's Museum, which opened in 1898, mountain biking on Signal Hill and the many local beaches in the area.
