The property
Experience relaxed coastal living at The Pods—a one-of-a-kind, family-friendly retreat just minutes from Whangaumu Bay on the Tutukaka Coast. One of the region’s finest sandy beaches, it offers safe swimming, fishing, and boat launching. The main pod features a modern kitchen complete with a breakfast bar and island, flowing into a bright and comfortable living space with a heat pump, Sky TV, Netflix, and Bose surround sound for entertainment both indoors and outdoors. Sliding doors open to a spacious, sheltered deck with an outdoor dining table and chairs and peaceful rural views through glass balustrades—perfect for long summer dinners with your group. When the sun's out, the wrap-around deck offers both sun-drenched and sheltered spots to choose from. The second pod offers excellent flexibility for families and groups. It includes two queen bedrooms, plus a third bedroom with a single-over-double bunk and a separate twin bunk, making it ideal for adults and children alike. A portacot is available on request, and an outdoor shower adds to the easy, beach-ready living. Outside, there’s plenty of room for kids to play safely in the garden while adults unwind with a good book or soak up the coastal sunshine. It’s a quick five-minute walk to the beach, or a short five-minute drive to Tutukaka Marina, which offers waterfront dining and boat trips to the Poor Knights Islands—one of New Zealand’s top diving destinations. For adventures further north, Matapōuri is an easy 25-minute drive away. Whether you’re seeking underwater adventure or a peaceful coastal escape, The Pods is a laid-back yet luxurious way to spend your Tutukaka summer.

Jesse “We were lucky enough to stay in this beautiful modern house for a week with an extended family group in February, and really enjoyed our stay.”
The house is in two wings linked by a big covered verandah, which despite the house being new and a bit fancy makes it feel like a proper bach and makes indoor - outdoor living seamless and easy. The house is in two wings linked by a big covered verandah, which despite the house being new and a bit fancy makes it feel like a proper bach and makes indoor - outdoor living seamless and easy. There is a little north-facing deck floating above the lawn which gets lovely midday sun, and by afternoon the whole house and main verandah area feels gets incredible sun from the west. The floor-to-ceiling glazing makes it feel open and connected to the landscape, and there are views out over the valley and a distant glimpse of Ngunguru Ocean Beach from the kitchen bench. It’s obvious the owners and / or architect have put real thought into the details. Everything in the house is thoughtful, great quality, and brand new without feeling clinical or generic. The kitchen is well equipped, with decent appliances, and the furniture and beds are very comfortable. Although it's not right on the beach, Whangaumu Bay is only a few minutes walk away, and it is really a beautiful beach. There are also many other smaller sandy golden bays within walking distance. You're also in the middle of an incredible stretch of coastline from Ngunguru up to Wolley's Bay, all accessible via a short drive. There’s also acres and acres of paved parking area, which makes the entry a bit stark and less welcoming, but is there should you need it. The only thing that we would suggest needs improvement is to install some insect screens on the bedroom windows. When we were there it was too hot to have the windows closed at night, but there were a few mosquitoes around so couldn't have the windows open. There is a mechanical ventilation system and air-con / heat pump in one of the bedrooms which helps, but it's not quite grunty enough to cool the entire bedroom wing. All-in-all, this is a thoughtfully designed, comfortable, light-filled house with amazing indoor-outdoor flow in a fantastic location. We’d absolutely stay again and would very happy to recommend it to anyone.
