The pastoral district of Onekaka lies on the Golden Bay coast, between the towns of Collingwood and Tanaka in the north west of New Zealand’s South Island. Onekaka is a Maori name that means “hot sand” or “hot beach”. The tiny hamlet has a population of only 250 residents, and the main industry is dairy farming. Onekaka is also home to a number of creatives, craftspeople and artisans who are drawn to the lush countryside and appreciate the lack of distractions necessary for their work. They give the community a bohemian vibe. For a laid back dining experience, the Mussel Inn in Onekaka is the place to go. Famous for their namesake steamed fresh mussels (in season) and mussel chowder, they also serve a variety of seafood, steak and vegetarian dishes. All of our Onekaka accommodation options are pre-inspected prior to your arrival and are ready for instant online booking.
