Just 85km southeast of Christchurch, the unique history of Akaroa lends to its extraordinary cultural and architectural roots. Once settled by French and British explorers, the French influence is still reflected today in the exquisite food, quaint villages and beautiful architecture. If a holiday to France is on your bucket list, the picturesque township of Akaroa gives you the best of both worlds, with both French and Ma?ori heritage. Aside from being utterly charmed by the region’s natural beauty and fascinating history, there’s no shortage of adventures and experiences to make your stay one to remember.

And with our extensive list of Akaroa holiday homes, we make selecting your accommodation a breeze, so you can spend more time planning your itinerary!

The location

Perched on the Banks Peninsula, Akaroa sits on Akaroa Harbour, which today is the flooded crater of an extinct volcano. The breathtaking seaside town boasts magnificent views of the vibrant blue water, rolling green hills and whimsical village streets to explore at your leisure.

The relaxed atmosphere of the town makes it the perfect vacation destination for any holiday-goers seeking to immerse themselves in the famously spectacular scenery of New Zealand. Adventurists will find their thrills in the countless outdoor nature activities, whilst those after a more leisurely escape have a wonderful array of walks, cafes, restaurants and shops to discover.

Things to do

>> Tour the sites of Akaroa

Akaroa Museum: A treat for history buffs, uncover the fascinating history of Akaroa step by step at the Akaroa Museum. Delving into the social and cultural history of the Banks Peninsula, learn about the region’s origins and first settlers through a showcase of art, photography, archives, costumes, textiles and more.

O?nuku Church: Take a short trip just 5km south of Akaroa to see one of the region’s most photographed sites. Built in 1870, the O?nuku Church is one of the oldest surviving Ma?ori churches in the country, featuring stunning Ma?ori carvings at the entrance and perched in front of a picturesque backdrop where rolling hills meet the water’s edge.

Akaroa Lighthouse: Your trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the town’s most iconic landmark: the Akaroa Lighthouse. Completed in 1879 but since retired, the lighthouse is a reminder of New Zealand’s maritime history. A scenic 15-minute walk will take you to the site, where you’ll also be met with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline.

>> Eat & drink your way through Akaroa

Local produce: Would the French influence be complete without a mouthwatering array of local cheeses to indulge in? We think not, and luckily, Barry’s Bay Traditional Cheese has this sorted. Making hand-crafted cheese since 1895, treat yourself to a taste test of the most decadent cheeses you’ve ever tasted, and be prepared for the fact that you probably won’t leave empty-handed! Plus, sample even more of the best produce from across the peninsula at the Akaroa Farmers Markets.

Restaurants & cafes: The dining in Akaroa - from the food itself to the setting and the experience - is unrivalled. From local cafes to fine dining restaurants and intimate bars, the culinary scene caters to every palette and every occasion.

Cooking classes: Bring a taste of Akaroa home with you. Learn from the best at the husband and wife-owned Akaroa Cooking School and walk away with incredible French cooking techniques and recipes to elevate your home cooking.

>> Embark on an adventure

Dolphin spotting: Animal lovers, we have the perfect experience just for you. Take a cruise on Akaroa Harbour to see the smallest species of dolphins - and even swim with them! If you’re lucky, you might also spot whales, Little Blue Penguins and more fascinating local wildlife as well.

Hikes: Trek along any number of the Banks Peninsula walks for absolutely breathtaking scenery along the coast. Take it easy with a half-day stroll, or hit the tracks for a full day of exploration.

Kayaking: In the summertime, rent a kayak to explore the bays from the sparkling blue water.
