For adventure junkies, nature enthusiasts, or anyone looking to experience the untouched beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, Mt Ruahepu is a slice of paradise. Located in the heart of the North Island, hit two of the country’s best slopes in winter, explore fascinating volcanic terrain in summer, and venture into the surrounding towns and national parks, just waiting to be discovered.

Plus, stay in the heart of all the action. Our list of Mt Ruapehu holiday homes range from budget-friendly units to stunning chalets sleeping large groups. Whatever your style or requirements, we have something to suit every holiday-goer.

The location

Located a 90-minute drive from Taupo or a four-hour drive from Auckland, Mt Ruapehu rises in the heart of the North Island. Offering magnificent panoramic views from its summit, Mt Ruapehu is the largest active volcano in New Zealand with its own crater lake at the peak, steaming from the geothermal activity beneath. Captivating to explore on foot and thrilling to ride when blanketed with snow, the mountain offers a host of adrenaline-pumping activities for visitors to enjoy all year round.

While Mt Ruapehu is a live volcano, the last eruption occurred in 1996 and the most recent lahar was in 2007. Advanced technology and early warning systems are in place to mitigate this risk and keep adventurists safe.

Things to do

Famous for its adventure tourism, Mt Ruapehu serves a range of thrilling experiences that cater to all ages and abilities.

>> Ride the Sky Waka

What better way to take in the remarkable scenery than from the air? Glide above the terrain on a 1.8km journey via the Sky Waka gondola and prepare for the dazzling views to snatch your breath away. End your journey 2020m above sea level and take in the magnificent display of endless New Zealand landscape before you. From here, take a walk to do some more exploration on foot, or enjoy a delicious snack, meal or High Tea at Knoll Ridge Chalet.

>> Hike the volcanic terrain

Get your walking boots on and follow our guides through the rocky landscape for a ground-level view of the incredible mountainside. With four walks to choose from, ranging from 20-minute tours to 2.5 hour hikes, your guide will expertly lead you through rugged tracks and rock formations, past waterfalls, spectacular views, and even a Lord of the Rings filming location.

>> Hit the slopes on two of the best ski areas

In the winter, get a taste of New Zealand’s famous snow sports scene at the country’s largest ski field, Whakapapa, or the longest vertical descent at Tu?roa. Advanced skiers and snowboarders can relish in the off-piste terrain, whilst beginners are taken care of with gentle slopes to get the hang of staying upright.

Whakapapa: Beginner 30%, Intermediate 45%, Advanced 25% Tu?roa: Beginner 20%, Intermediate 50%, Advanced 25%

>> Enjoy water sports on the Whanganui River

Rocket along the Whanganui River in a jet boat ride through the depths of the forest, over rapids, past majestic waterfalls, and past the famous Bridge To Nowhere. Prefer to take the surroundings at a slower pace? Paddle along in a canoe instead for a more cruisey yet equally memorable experience.

>> Cycle the spectacular trails

In the warmer months, venture on any number of the region’s amazing cycling trails for an unforgettable adventure. The popular Ohakune Old Coach Road will take you on a journey through history and nature, tracing the route of an early horse-drawn coach track. Pedal through lush forests and across historic viaducts, uncovering tales of pioneering days gone by.

>> Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Your trip wouldn’t be complete without a trek through the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Hosting what has been touted by many as New Zealand’s greatest day walk, the rewarding journey across volcanic terrain will lead you on an epic venture over old lava flows and craters, past the Emerald Lakes, and through lush green forest.

Finish your action-packed days cosy and relaxed in one of our Mt Ruapehu holiday homes to rest and recharge for the next day of adventure!
