Think the North island is all about beaches and bush walks? Think again.
Come winter, it transforms into a snowy playground packed with epic ski fields and unforgettable adventures.
Mount Ruapehu may not boast the towering peaks of the South Island, but it offers something truely unique – the chance to ski on an active volcano. When conditions align and the snow falls, the North Island delivers surprisingly good skiing right in the country’s heartland. It’s perfect for those wanting a ski experience without the journey south, or for anyone looking to add variety to their New Zealand winter adventure.
Where To Hit The Slopes
Whakapapa Ski Area

One of New Zealand’s most spectacular ski areas, Whakapapa offers incredble volcanic terrain with something for everyone. From the beginner-friendly Happy Valley slopes to wide open intermediate runs and steep challenges up top, it’s perfect for families, groups and serious skiers alike.
Bonus: Hop abroad the Sky Waka Gondola for jaw-dropping views (and easy mountain access, even if you are not skiing!)
Tūroa Ski Area

On the south-western side of Mt Ruapehu, Tūroa is known for its massive natural half-pipes, big powder days and impressive vertical drop. The High Noon Express chairlift boasts the longest lift-accessed vertical descent in the country (722m). It’s a paradise for intermediate to advanced skiers, but there is still plenty of space for newer skiers to build confidence too.
Tukino Ski Field

Looking for something a lottle more off-the-beaten-track? Tukino is a club operated ski field that feels like a true hidden gem. It is less crowded, super friendly and great for families or anyone wanting a quieter, more personal ski experience. Plus, it’s a hotspot for backcountry ski touring when conditions allow.
Planning Your Trip

When is the best time?
