The Britten Stables, Christchurch
The Britten Stables is so much more than your average luxury Christchurch accommodation. This restored dwelling has a phenomenally rich history, which is available for guests from all over the world as well as locals who seek an utterly unique experience. Having featured on TV Three’s Grand Designs, it’s no surprise this home is set to wow you from the moment you arrive.
The property was originally bought by John Britten in 1978, who converted the former stable block of the Mona Vale estate into a family home for himself, wife Kirsteen and their three children, Sam, Isabelle and Jessica. John Britten was a world renowned Inventor and Motorcycle Designer and the traditional features he introduced to the home have been restored and highlighted beautifully in the Stables we see today.
After the Canterbury earthquakes in 2011, the husband and wife team (Isabelle and Tim Weston) undertook the lofty task of rebuilding the historic dwelling. The scope of the project was immense, with unreinforced brickwork that was badly damaged and the enormous glass conservatory to tend to. Steel frames and glass were brought in to replace the collapsed brick of the gables, as well as the roof being redone and an entire new dwelling added to compliment the Stables, acting as a studio space.
It’s been a long road to get to the breathtaking luxurious homestead you see today. Expect to find a contemporary, bold aesthetic that expertly compliment the exposed raw materials of the building. The original charm has been lovingly restored and the gabled bedrooms and bathrooms are testament to that, complete with some of John Britten’s original handmade bronze tapware.
It would be rude not to mention the plethora of fantastic facilities and amenities for you to enjoy during your stay. Firstly The Stables span across over 900sqm, including an expansive backyard. A selection of seven luxury and spacious rooms, all with an ensuite await and ensure there is space for everyone in your group to completely relax. A few of the outstanding features include: a billiard room, indoor swimming pool, expansive conservatory with stunning stained glass work, private heated spa pool in the lush gardens, a large entertainers kitchen and a further two additional kitchens, media room, nine heat pumps/air conditioning units and off street parking for up to 3 cars. If that isn’t enough to impress you, just wait till you step inside and see this masterpiece for yourself.
The restoration of this property cost over 2.5 million and has resulted in an incredibly unique dwelling that offers an equally unique experience and stay. The Britten Stables is centrally located in idyllic Christchurch and is close to all amenities including the central city 3.5km drive away, Christchurch airport 5.5km, shops 1.1km and public transport.
