Best New Zealand proposal locations
You’ve found the love of your life, you’ve found the perfect ring, now you need the perfect spot to make it forever. We see a lot of our beautiful country, and these are our top picks for the best place to propose in New Zealand!
From the adventurous to the fairytale, read on for New Zealand’s most proposal-worthy spots…
1. Queenstown
Whether you’re adrenaline junkies or old fashioned romantics, Queenstown has the perfect spot to get down on one knee.
Adventurous types can helicopter to an awe inspiring alpine lookout (find a company that offers a ‘proposal package’ to ramp up the romance with bubbles and flowers), or take the leap with a skydive or bungy proposal.
If that’s not your style, set the scene with a sunrise hot air balloon flight, before celebrating with a champagne breakfast in the field after your trip. Head to the tranquil Queenstown Gardens for an intimate proposal picnic, or ask for their hand under the stars in a candlelit hot tub.
2. Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Pop the question under a living milky way as your boat glides silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. From the spiral staircase and ‘crystal tapestries’ of Ruakuri Cave, to Waitomo Cave’s serene stream passages and glow worms, nothing says ‘forever’ like a light show 30 million years in the making.
If thousands of glow worms aren’t romantic enough pale pink and white stalactites cover almost every inch of Aranui Cave, creating a dramatic backdrop for your big moment.
3. Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Start the rest of your lives enveloped in some of New Zealand’s most awe inspiring scenery. While taking a day hike might not seem like the ideal time to get down on one knee, we think it’s pretty metaphorical. You’ll face changeable weather conditions and a challenging trek, but when you take it on together the rewards are phenomenal!
Pop the question above the iconic blue pools for a memorable (and photogenic) proposal – you could even sneakily ask another hiker to take some snaps of the moment they say yes!

4. The Redwoods Treewalk
Make your dreams come true in the company of giants. Walk high above the forest floor on suspended bridges and platforms through 75-metre-tall redwood trees, native flora and fauna. The Rotorua Redwoods Treewalk is magical by day, but even more so at night, when the glow of sculptural lights transforms the forest into a lantern-lit fairytale just waiting for a happy ending.
If you need more proof that the tree walk is proposal-ready, the New York Times recently named Rotorua and the Redwoods Nightlights as one of the top 50 places to see in the world.
5. Milford Sound
Hear them say yes in one of New Zealand’s most naturally beautiful locations. Pop the question while cruising clear blue waters through otherworldly mists, or create a memorable moment in front of cascading waterfalls or sky-high cliffs.
Milford Sound offers a variety of cruises, kayaking trips, scenic flights and hikes through lush bush – including the iconic Milford Track – so you’re sure to come across the perfect proposal spot.
6. Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island holds more romantic settings than a Mills and Boon novel – vineyards, golden beaches, yacht cruises, 5 star dining, art galleries, native bush walks and clifftop hideaways.
Just a 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland, the relaxed vibe of Waiheke Island feels like another world. (It’s also home to stunning weddings venues if you’d like to double the warm fuzzy feelings by returning for your big day!)
