Our Favorite Things To Do Near Cooks Beach
Cooks Beach has got to be one of the best places to experience a classic kiwi beachside holiday. With a laid back town vibe, a beautiful beach and a great location nestled between other Coromandel hotspots such as Cathedral Cove and Whitianga, you’re right amongst some of the top Coromandel attractions that make the area ‘good for your soul’. Check out some of our favorite things to do in the area and our favorite cooks beach accommodations for your next stay!
Fishing off Cooks Beach
It’s commonplace for those visiting and living in Cooks Beach to take their boat with them and hope for a bit of luck out on the water. You can launch the boat right off the main beach or head around closer to the estuary for a chance at some quality catches including the likes of snapper, trevally and kingfish. Our local holiday managers in the Cooks Beach area are passionate about fishing, having spent nine years as fishing tackle retailers in Rotorua – they’ll be sure to give you some insider’s knowledge during your stay about what’s been happening in the water!
Tip: If you’re a keen fisher it’s a good idea to make sure your Cooks Beach accommodation has enough space for boat parking.

Shakespeare’s Cliff to Lonely Bay Walk
One of the many beautiful walks in the region includes a short but steep walk through the historic Shakespeare’s reserve to Lonely Bay. The 20-30 minute walk there is well worth the effort; Lonely Bay is beautifully framed by high cliff faces and surrounded by native bush, a sight that could be easily mistaken for a secluded island in the middle of the Pacific. Don’t forget to stop at the lookout on the way there either, the views overlooking Whitianga and Cooks Beach are not to miss. Great for the Instagram, too!
Visit Mercury Bay Estate Winery
Heading away on a girl’s weekend or a couple’s getaway? Mercury Bay Estate probably has a wine to match with that. Located just a short drive inland from the beach, this vineyard has a great uphill position looking out towards the coast. They also make amazing wood fired pizzas and tasting platters, as well as offer a wide range of wines for tasting. Learn more about where you can find them here.
