What to do in Turangi!

Not far from Taupo is a small charming town known as Turangi. Turangi is the place to be for families wanting a hiking or skiing holiday away in the North Island. From relaxing hot pools, ski rental shops and quirky cafes and nearby mountains and trails – there’s plenty to do. We’ve put together a list of five must-dos while in Turangi to help you maximise your holiday away.

Here are our top 5 things to do on your trip to Turangi…

1. Get cosy in the hot pools

Nothing beats lounging about in hot pools after a long day skiing. Turangi has hot pools known as the Tokaanu Thermal Pools. These natural thermal pools are said to have healing powers and are suitable for any age to enjoy. Families can have access to the public bathing areas for around $8 a person or pay a bit extra to have access to the private pools. We highly recommend a visit at night to stargaze in this special area of New Zealand!

2. Get all your skiing needs

If you’re planning a holiday in Turangi, chances are a major drawcard for you will be the easy access to skiing at Mt Ruapehu! Turangi Ski Hire offers all your rental needs for your ski holiday, with everything from skiis, snowboards, poles, goggles, snow clothes and boots. Forget about the fuss of having to lug all your ski gear with you on the holiday.

3. Shop local

The Turangi Farmer’s Market offers visiting families the chance to get the freshest local produce while on holiday. Set up in the town centre, you can shop for a range of fresh produce from local farmers, allowing you to get the best ingredients for a home-cooked meal at your holiday home. We promise Turangi will never taste so good!

4. Make dining an easy affair

If you’re too knackered to cook for your family or group after a day of adventuring, you’re in luck! Turangi has numerous takeaway options to make meal time quick and easy. From Hong Kong Chinese Takeaways to Turangi Fish & Chips, Golden Crust Pizza and Monsoon Indian Cuisine, you’ll be able to grab some tasty food quickly and bring it back to your Turangi holiday home. Bliss.

5. Check out the coolest café in town

Every Kiwi town comes with somewhat of an institutional café. Cadillac Café is just that to the town of Turangi. This adorable little café produces a delicious cup of coffee and a fantastic family-friendly atmosphere. There are heaps of board games to enjoy while waiting for your food (anyone up for a round of snakes and ladders?) and the burgers are world-class! It is about as close as you can get to an authentic American style café in the Southern Hemisphere.
