Our Favorite New Zealand Winter Holiday Homes

Landscape Mountains New Zealand Winter Snow

You clock in hours all year at work; now it’s time to clock out and enjoy snowy adventures in a winter wonderland.

We’ve put together a list of stunning winter Holiday Homes where you can snuggle in around the fire with a warm mug of cocoa or experience the best cold-weather adventures with sports like skiing and snowboarding.

During the winter months of June through August, snow is ample. The average temperature hovers between 12 to 16℃. The further south your travel, the more likely you are to experience colder temperatures which can reach as low as -10℃ during winter months.

We designed this winter home list with two vacation types in mind. We chose two winter homes that are perfect for slow, quiet winter nights enjoyed indoors with family or friends. In contrast, the other two homes we’ve selected are for adventure-seekers who love to explore winter sports and outdoor living on vacation.

1. Cosy Warm Log Cabin

winter log cabin

The Cosy Warm Log Cabin is nestled into the picturesque Mt Ruapehu in Ohakune. Settle in for a stunning view from this tranquil mountain cabin decked out in all-wood.

Enjoy a relaxing dip in the on-site hot tub after a day of winter sports and take in the fun lighting and antiques throughout the home. Have no worries about dragging muddy wet gear through the home, as it features a drying room for your convenience.

The cabin can comfortably fit 6 people, with 3 bedrooms, including a queen and two single beds, and 2 bathrooms.

Each room is full of character and offers a relaxing vibe. Kick back and watch the Smart TV and DVD player or chill with your favorite winter read by the warm wood-burner fireplace. The log cabin is conveniently located within walking distance to local shops and restaurants, so you can enjoy a quiet stroll and take in the tranquil scenery.

2. Snowshoe Cabin at National Park

Winter Holiday Homes

A stay at Snowshoe Cabin is a great way to explore all that National Park has to offer.

The home is nestled between World Heritage Tongariro National Park to the east and Whanganui National Park. Every year thousands of visitors flock to this iconic park, and you can enjoy a front-stage view from your own private winter home to experience the best of both worlds.

Enjoy a quick walk to Mt Ruapehu or local restaurants. This spacious lodge can fit up to 10 guests, offering 3 bedrooms- one with three singles and a double bed, the second with 2 singles and one double bed, and the last with a double bed. Bring your group of friends or the whole family to the lively mountain retreat.

The cabin is located near the Tongariro crossing, which is just a 10-minute walk or quick shuttle ride away. For adventure, skiing, kayaking, tramping, and mountain biking are offered nearby.

3. The Hillvue with Spa- Arrowtown Holiday Home

best nz winter accommodations

This home in the historic Arrowtown has it all.

Explore the stars up close with the on-site telescope or enjoy a home-cooked meal with friends and family in the full-size outdoor kitchen and entertainment area. The two-story home’s split floor plan is perfect for sharing with another family; it comfortably fits up to 12 guests.

Everyone can relax in their own spaces spread among 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Bedrooms 1 and 2 have a queen bed, bedroom 3 offers 3 bunk beds, and the 4th bedroom, downstairs, has 2 single beds and a sofa. Everything you need for adventure is right at your fingertips.

The home stores 6 quality bikes, snow sleds, equipment for tennis and badminton, cricket or golf, and equipment for gold-panning next door at the Arrow River. River boogie boards are included as a bonus!

When you are ready to relax and unwind, there’s a spa set up, right in the home. You may opt to slow down and stay in for a quiet night to make use of the home’s amenities, including an extensive collection of toys, games, and digital devices. Everyone can cuddle into their own space, as the home boasts 5 TVs and a generous DVD and reading collection.

4. Sunnyside Retreat with Spa Pool – Mangawhai Holiday Home

winter holiday home

Sunnyside Retreat is a flawless family-friendly home built for your next vacation.

Kids will love the trampoline while you relax under the covered patio. On cooler winter nights, cosy up near the outdoor brazier to enjoy outdoor/indoor living year-round. Gather around the table with our family games and host a family game night.

When it’s warm, head down to the beach and soak up some rays, located just 2 minutes away! While you’re out and about, explore Northland’s local cafes, restaurants, and shops for a quick bite. This home comfortably fits 6 people and offers 3 bedrooms and one bathroom. Bedroom 1 has a king-sized bed, and bedrooms 2 and 3 have a queen bed each and 1 sofa for extra sleeping space. You can bring your pet with you to this pet-friendly holiday home.

No matter what you’re looking for, these Bachcare Winter Holiday Homes offer all the amenities to plan a perfect winter escape.

Amenities vary from site to site, offering games and toys to trampolines for children to enjoy, a spa or hot tub to relax and unwind, and winter or outdoor sports gear to experience an active mountain lifestyle.
