What to do in Tauranga
Ah, nothing quite beats a family holiday to Tauranga. The sun, the city, the food, the beach…. we could go on and on about why this happy place is such a fabulous family holiday destination. The endless array of family friendly activities are quite overwhelming and may require multiple visits to complete them all (which we recommend!).
To help you narrow it down and ensure your kids experience the best of the best, we’ve put together a list of seven things to do in Tauranga…
1. Lounge the day away in the hot pools
Located in Mount Maunganui and just a stone’s throw away from the beach is the Mount Hot Pools. Perfect for families who want to enjoy the stunning day but want a safer environment for the kids to enjoy the water, the Mount Hot Pools are a must-do while in Tauranga. The pools are set up brilliantly so that adults and kids alike will be able to enjoy and whether it’s rain or shine, the water temperature is absolutely perfect.
2. Challenge the family to an escape room
Escape rooms are all the rage and there’s no better way to bond as a family than working as a team to try and get out of one! The Escape Rooms Tauranga is the only one in New Zealand that offers families the chance to play 90-minute games. You can choose from a wide range of themes – from The Shire, Da Vinci, Mad Scientist, School of Wizardry and Follow the White Rabbit…. and really, why not try them all?
3. Test the need for speed
When the suns out, why not head to Bay Karts to test out the family’s need for speed? Offering pristine tracks that are suitable for all ages and all ability levels, it is a guaranteed great time at the tracks. We won’t be surprised if your family’s competitive streak comes out and the staff are more than likely to get invested in your races as well.
4. Enjoy an afternoon out on the greens
Tauranga offers one of the coolest mini golf courses in the Bay of Plenty and it’s one we know your whole family will love. Mini Golf Tauranga is located right along the Tauranga Harbour and offers 18 holes of family-filled fun! Open seven days a week, there’s no excuse to not fit it into your family’s holiday itinerary.
5. Take in the views
What better way to bond as a family than jump out of a plane and go skydiving together?! Skydive Tauranga offers the most beautiful skydive in the North Island and an incredible way to take in the stunning sights of the coastline. You’ll see Mt Taranaki, White Island, Mt Ruapehu and The Coromandel while soaring through the sky. If that’s not reason enough, they are also doing a sustainability initiative where every tandem jump results in a donation to Trees that Count (so a tree will be planted in your honour after free-falling from the sky). Does a family bonding activity really get any better than this?
6. Enjoy a scenic walk
Whether you want to walk along the coastline, through the harbour or in the bush, Tauranga has tracks for every ability and desire. The best walks are really found at McLaren Falls Park, where you can take walks to waterfalls, through the dense forests and then end up chilling in the naturally formed rock pools. Sounds like a great family outing to us!
7. Treat the kids to an adventure
Acting as both a water park and adventure park, Waimarino Adventure Park is a dream come true for children of all ages. Located along the Wairou River 10 minutes from Tauranga, this tranquil park offers kayaking courses, trampolines, diving boards, beach volleyball, water slides and more. Better yet, the Park has some mint BBQ facilities that your family can use to cook dinner after a big day of adventure.
From adrenaline activities to leisurely strolls, Tauranga is the perfect home base for a family holiday. Check out our Tauranga holiday homes and start planning your trip!
